Uniformity

活动地点:

The Museum at FIT, 7th Avenue at 27 Street, New York, 10001

内容:

Uniforms are the antithesis of high fashion. Where uniform design focuses on notions of functionality, control, and tradition, fashion promotes constant change, creativity, and subversion. Yet fashion has often drawn inspiration from uniforms of all kinds, taking functional features and transforming them into decorative elements.

Simultaneously designed to blend in and stand out, uniforms occupy a unique place in our society. We encounter uniforms everywhere, from those of soldiers and school children, to the distinctive attire of flight attendants and fast-food clerks. Likewise, the uniforms of athletes and police officers have become familiar, everyday sights. They are overt symbols of social order, but they are also considered so commonplace that they are often overlooked.

Fantasy Football Week: 1920 football uniform of wool and cotton duck. #Uniformity http://exhibitions.fitnyc.edu/uniformity/

Early football uniforms did not include large pads or helmets, but they were made out of durable materials like wool or canvas to withstand the high-contact nature of the game. Here, the pants provide some padding, but not the top.

Fantasy Football Week: Geoffrey Beene silk and sequins evening dress, fall 1967. #Uniformity http://exhibitions.fitnyc.edu/uniformity/

In 1967, Geoffrey Beene stunned fashion’s elite when he transformed the familiar football jersey into an evening gown. Covered entirely in shimmering sequins, the dress is essentially an elongated jersey ripped straight from the field—complete with a large “38” across the chest and the contrasting armbands particular to football uniforms.

Workwear Week: Inpired by waiters. Thom Browne men's spring 2017 + KARL LAGERFELD for CHANEL “Brasserie Gabrielle” ensemble, fall 2015 #Uniformity http://exhibitions.fitnyc.edu/uniformity/

Lagerfeld's ensemble mimics the uniform of Parisian brasserie waiters with a short black jacket, bow tie, long white apron, and a purse shaped like plates. According to WWD, Karl Lagerfeld wanted “to celebrate something intrinsically French,” so he took the eminently Parisian brasserie as his starting point and drew on the waiters’ distinctive attire.
