Disliking your appearance has reached epidemic proportions in Western societies. This is a problem. It affects our relationships with others, how we move through the world and leads to a host of psychological and physical health problems.
Body image researchers seek to undo this epidemic of body dissatisfaction by changing the appearance ideals promoted in mass media. Researchers ask various industries including fashion, fitness and beauty industries, to represent diverse models and to stop airbrushing. To date such actions have been met with limited success, partially because these industries are – by their nature – designed to create needs or insecurities in which they can sell to.
In this lecture, Dr Jankowski will introduce the problem of body dissatisfaction, how researchers and others are trying to solve this and outline an alternative, broader, form of advocacy that academics and activists can usefully engage in.
