"Through its history jewellery was more than ornamental. Jewels are personal and have a symbolic meaning for the wearer based on the myths and rituals of society. Often given on special occasions they marked important events in life from cradle to grave. Jewellery was worn as symbols of faith, protective amulets, as well as a sign of authority and distinction. This course reveals the meanings behind Western jewellery from late Antiquity till today and its significance to the wearer."
